Black Moon on 31 August 2027
A “Black Moon” usually means the second new moon in a calendar month, the new moon equivalent of a Blue Moon. In Central European time, this falls on 31 August 2027 at 19:41 CEST. There is nothing to see: the new moon is invisible, but the nights around it are especially dark, ideal for meteors and the Milky Way. In time zones far to the east, the second new moon falls in a different month, so the label depends on local time.

At new moon, the Sun and Moon lie in the same direction as seen from Earth. The Moon’s lit side faces away from us, making it invisible. New moon is an exact moment; from the following evening, a thin crescent appears in the western sky after sunset. The interval between new moons, the synodic month, averages 29.53 days, which is why some years have 13 new moons.
