Times are from the US Naval Observatory, rounded to the nearest minute and converted to Central European Time: CET, with CEST from 26 March to 29 October 2028. Zodiac signs, distances from Earth and moonrise times are calculated geocentrically using the tropical zodiac. Some moon calendars truncate seconds and give a time one minute earlier, such as 16:03 rather than 16:04 on 10 February.

Blue Moon 2028: two full moons in December

December 2028 has two full moons: on 2 December at 02:40 and 31 December at 17:48 CET. The second full moon in a calendar month is called a Blue Moon, although it does not turn blue. In 2028 it is also the Blood Moon of a total lunar eclipse, with totality from 17:16 to 18:28 CET, low in the east shortly after moonrise. Times and lunar altitudes for 15 cities are on the Lunar eclipse 2028.

Under the older seasonal definition (the third of four full moons in a season), there is no Blue Moon in 2028: each of the four seasons has exactly three full moons. The previous calendar Blue Moon was on 31 May 2026; the next after New Year's Eve 2028 is on 30 September 2031.

    Supermoons and micromoons in 2028

The Moon's orbit is elliptical, so full moons vary in apparent size. On 10 February 2028, the full moon is around 356,700 km from Earth; on 4 September, around 406,200 km. February's full moon appears about 14 per cent larger and around 30 per cent brighter than September's. The difference is clear in photographs placed side by side, but hard to judge with the naked eye alone.

The full moon and Easter 2028

Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Spring begins on 20 March 2028, and its first full moon is on Sunday, 9 April 2028 at 12:26 CEST. As this full moon falls on a Sunday (Palm Sunday), Easter Sunday is a week later, on 16 April 2028. Churches use a fixed ecclesiastical full moon and 21 March for their calculation; in 2028, both methods give the same date.

Harvest Moon on German Unity Day

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. Autumn begins on 22 September 2028; the 3 October full moon (18:25 CEST) is eleven days later, closer than the one on 4 September. It rises in Hamburg at 18:12, just over half an hour before sunset (18:51), and stays in the sky throughout the public holiday night. Other monthly names, such as January's Wolf Moon, June's Strawberry Moon and December's Cold Moon, come mainly from North American farmers' almanacs. They are folklore rather than astronomical terms.

    Weekend full moons 2028

For a full moon walk, a night of photography or a ritual without an early alarm, the night when the Moon looks full matters. Only three full moons in 2028 fall on Friday or Saturday nights:

Allowing a day's flexibility adds Saturday, 8 April (full moon on Sunday lunchtime), and New Year's Eve. Use the planner above to filter weekend nights and add moonrise times for your city straight to your calendar.

Why 2028 has thirteen full moons

The average interval between full moons is 29.53 days. Twelve lunar months total just over 354 days, eleven fewer than a calendar year. That difference accumulates until a thirteenth full moon fits into a year every two or three years: last in 2026, now in 2028, then in 2031 and 2034.

The astrology of the 2028 full moons

At full moon, the Sun and Moon occupy opposite signs. Western astrology sees it as the peak of a lunar cycle, a time for completion and release. Its theme comes from the axis between the two signs. Two full moons in 2028 fall in Cancer (January and New Year's Eve), both with lunar eclipses.

Does a full moon affect sleep?

A field study of people in Argentina and Seattle found that participants fell asleep later and slept less in the three to five nights before a full moon (Casiraghi et al., Science Advances 2021). The effect was small but measurable even in cities with artificial light. If you sleep lightly, the dates above can help you notice patterns without explaining every restless night.
