Moon calendar 2027: gardening and haircuts
A popular lunar tradition recommends cutting hair for strong growth when the waxing Moon is in Leo or Virgo. In 2027, these dates include 22 January, 19–20 February and 18–21 March; there are none from October to December. For gardening, the tradition is to sow fruiting crops on fruit days (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) with a waxing Moon, and root vegetables on root days (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with a waning Moon. These rules have no established scientific basis.

Why are there no dates in autumn? The waxing Moon always occupies signs ahead of the Sun. In autumn, the Sun is in Libra and Scorpio, so the waxing Moon tends to fall between Sagittarius and Taurus. In Leo and Virgo, it is then waning.

Astronomical calculations (geocentric, tropical zodiac). Times are Central European Time (CET/CEST). Dates use the moon sign on the day; when the sign changes in the afternoon, the previous day may also suit.
Tropical or sidereal?
There are two approaches. Books such as “Vom richtigen Zeitpunkt” by Paungger/Poppe use the tropical zodiac, as this page does. Maria Thun’s biodynamic sowing calendar uses the visible constellations, which now sit roughly one sign apart from the tropical zodiac. This explains why many online moon calendars give different dates: they follow different systems.
What research shows
Controlled studies have found no reliable effect of moon phase on hair growth or crop yields. Weather, soil temperature and the season matter much more. If you enjoy planning by the Moon, check frost and soil conditions first, then use the lunar calendar to refine your timing.
